For more than 30 years SURGE (Skipton Union Representing Group Employees) has been the only organisation recognised by the Group for the purposes of negotiation and consultation on the Terms and Conditions of employment and has played an integral part of the continued growth and success of the Skipton Group.
SURGE is an independent Trade Union and has been affiliated with the TUC since 2004.
Why Join SURGE?
SURGE provides help, guidance and representation to members involved in job grading appeals, grievances and disciplinary procedures and Management consults SURGE about policy in a number of areas.
SURGE is crucial to high-level consultations with the Group that will be visible to all of the employees, but it is also important to recognise that we also look after our members on an individual level. We rarely talk about it as confidentiality is imperative to the way we operate, so our successes in this area are rarely reported.
SURGE has just fewer than 30 representatives across the Group and UK and since the 01st January 2010 SURGE has one full-time senior officer. So far in 2010 SURGE have dealt with hundreds of queries from individual members, and have represented many of these individuals in disciplinary and grievances.
Some of the issues SURGE have helped our members with are things like flexible working arrangements, absence issues, bonus/pay queries, health and safety concerns, changing roles, and a vast range of others.
SURGE is crucial in highlighting and fighting any discrimination and we help to promote equal opportunities at work. We make sure that our members’ legal rights are enforced at work, and we help improve pay and working conditions where possible by negotiating with the employer. We represent our members formally and informally. SURGE also provides services for individual members like personal legal help and various discounts on and services.

The subscription fees are the least expensive for a Trade Union in the UK. If you are a full time employee the cost is £2.50 per month and if you work part time hours (16 hours per week or less) then the cost is £2.00 per month.
I feel I will never need the Union, so why join?
This is a common perception within any workplace, but the simple answer is we never know what is around the corner. For example, if you do not have house insurance then one day there is a fire in your house, it would be too late to have cover to accommodate and solve the situation you find yourself in.
Joining a Union is crucial for an individual to know that if they ever find themselves in a position where they need help from an experienced, trained and knowledgeable source, they have SURGE to support them and represent them.
