Media Release

‘Today’s news that HML are planning to make 45 roles are at risk of redundancy in Derry and 35 roles are at risk across HML’s Padiham, Glasgow and Skipton sites will come as a severe blow to our members’ said Brian McDaid General Secretary of SURGE, the union which represents employees throughout the Skipton group.

‘It is a severe blow for everyone coming as it does at a time of rising unemployment and uncertainty.’

‘SURGE is in regular consultation meetings with HML Management about the impact of these job losses and whilst we can understand the business rationale for reducing staff numbers as business volumes have fallen, it is nevertheless very disappointing to see so many of our members lose their jobs through no fault of their own and we must also remember the wider implications this will have on their families. We will do our best in these discussions with Management to mitigate the situation for our members faced with redundancy and will look at measures to help them find new employment as quickly as possible.

We have proposed various options to the company to limit the amount of compulsory redundancies, like the offer of voluntary redundancy, short term career breaks and the option for employees to reduce their hours for a temporary period and we are encouraged that management have agreed to review these options’
